Monstera are native to rainforests so they thrive in humid environments. Keep in mind that after a leaf develops it will not change. If your plants new leaves are brown or black before it has even unfurled your plant has most likely suffered from a very bad soil moisture imbalance.

If you live somewhere dry placing a humidifier next to your plants is a great way to increase humidity. Monstera leaves may not split if they are too young or if the plant is not getting enough light. I obsessively photographed my plant over 16 days and this is what it looked like. If your Monstera has large fenestrated leaves you should be able to see the fenestrations before it starts to unfurl.
