If your plant is old enough for splitting try putting it in an area where it will get more light. If you notice the lower leaves especially the oldest leaves are turning yellow go ahead and feel the soil. The plant has since been doing great it appears to be very healthy and has grown many new leaves so I assume I am taking care of it correctly.
When a monstera is still maturing it can be common that it does not produce leaves that are split.
With proper care Monstera leaves start splitting when its 2-3 years old. Repot your Monstera once a year then every 2-3 years when its older. Prune your Monstera regularly clipping any dry or dead leaves. However the Philodendron clan is large and varied and has many cousins with split leaves being a rather common trait.
